Obverse description The obverse presents conjoined busts in right-facing profile of naturalist John Muir, depicted with his characteristic long beard and wearing a wide-brimmed hat, overlapping the bust of President Theodore Roosevelt, shown with his distinctive mustache and pince-nez spectacles. Behind the figures, to the left, rises a finely detailed rendering of Yosemite's Half Dome granite formation flanked by towering conifers, evoking the landscape the two figures famously camped in together in 1903. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper rim, while the date 2016 and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST appear in the lower field. The engraver's initials DE are visible in the lower right field.
