One of 28 silver issues released across four series between 1973 and 1976 to finance the Montréal Games, this coin was part of an ambitious fundraising program that ultimately fell short. The organizing committee had banked heavily on coin and lottery revenues to offset construction costs, but the stadium and facilities ran so far over budget — final figures reached roughly CAD $1.5 billion — that Québec taxpayers were still servicing the debt until 2006.
