Kutuzov's reputation was rehabilitated dramatically under Stalin, who needed historical precedents for Soviet resistance against Western invaders. The 1812 campaign — in which Kutuzov's strategic retreats, including the surrender of Moscow, ultimately exhausted Napoleon's Grande Armée — was recast as a blueprint for Soviet endurance. This Liberian issue belongs to a wave of commemorative struck by small nations with no connection to the subject, produced explicitly for the collector market rather than circulation.
