Hutt River Province — formally the Province of Hutt River — was a self-declared micronation in Western Australia whose founder, Leonard Casley, unilaterally seceded from Australia in 1970 over a wheat quota dispute. By the early 1990s the province was issuing an expanding range of collector coins, this AWACS piece among them. The coins had no meaningful circulation economy; they were sold directly to collectors and curiosity-seekers visiting the property or through mail order.
