Palau has issued commemorative silver under licensing arrangements since the 1990s, producing themed series for foreign markets with no pretense of domestic circulation. This piece belongs to the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World adjacents — a loose commercial franchise of "sacred places" issues that flooded the numismatic gift market in the late 2000s. Kiyomizu-dera, the 8th-century Buddhist and Shinto temple complex on the eastern hills of Kyoto, has been rebuilt multiple times — most recently in 1633 under Tokugawa Iemitsu.
