Obverse description The national coat of arms of Belize is centrally displayed, featuring a quartered shield bearing crossed tools and a sailing vessel, supported by two bare-chested woodcutters — one shouldering an axe, the other a paddle — flanking the shield. A mahogany tree rises above the shield as a crest, and a scroll beneath bears the national motto. The arms are encircled by an olive wreath. The legend BELIZE arcs across the upper field, the date 1982 appears in the lower field, and a continuous beaded border frames the entire design.

Obverse lettering BELIZE SUB UMBRA FLOREO FM 1982
(Translation: I flourish in the shade.)
Reverse description A keel-billed toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus), the national bird of Belize, is depicted in high relief perched on a branch and facing right, its characteristically large and multicolored bill rendered in fine detail. The bird's plumage and the branch are naturalistically modeled against a smooth field. The denomination legend FIVE DOLLARS arcs across the upper portion of the reverse, with a beaded border encircling the entire design.
