Belize gained independence from Britain in 1981, but this series began circulating seven years earlier under the newly established Central Bank — itself only created in 1982, meaning the coins were actually issued by the Monetary Authority of Belize during most of this run. The five-dollar denomination was ambitious for a nation whose economy depended heavily on sugar exports and whose circulating coinage had previously been tied directly to the Eastern Caribbean Currency Authority.
At 23 grams in copper-nickel, the coin was heavy enough that many simply did not circulate actively at face value.
