Obverse description At centre, the crowned Lion of Judah passant to the right with its raised right forepaw grasping a ribboned processional cross, the imperial crown atop the lion's head rendered in fine relief. A Ge'ez legend arcs across the upper field, with the Latin denomination 'E$5' to the right and the date '-1972-' inscribed in the lower exergue beneath the lion. The Latin legend 'EMPIRE OF ETHIOPIA' curves along the lower border, flanking the date. A small mint mark appears below the lion in the exergue area.
