Kiribati gained independence from Britain on July 12, 1979, having previously been administered as the Gilbert Islands colony. The 1981 issue paired that independence commemoration with the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer — a dual-theme approach that was commercially motivated, capitalizing on the global demand for Royal Wedding memorabilia while giving a two-year-old nation a cost-effective way to expand its commemorative coin program.
The pairing is historically awkward: Kiribati had just left the Commonwealth realm, making British royal imagery on its coinage an odd editorial choice driven more by the mint market than by any diplomatic logic.
