Liberia issued a flood of commemorative crown-sized pieces throughout the 1990s targeting the collector market rather than circulation, and this Diana memorial piece is squarely in that category. The coins were produced following her death in August 1997 and distributed almost entirely through dealer channels and home-shopping networks, never meaningfully touching Liberian commerce.
Hundreds of similar issues from small-nation licensors saturated the market in 1997–98, suppressing secondary market values almost immediately after release.
