| Obverse description | The central field displays the Coat of Arms of Liberia, depicting a sailing ship at sea, a palm tree, and a rising sun, surmounted by a scroll bearing the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE. Liberia made a cottage industry of foreign celebrity commemoratives throughout the 1990s, and the Diana memorial issues were among the most heavily marketed — sold through Bradford Exchange-style direct mail campaigns rather than through any numismatic channel. Struck within months of her August 1997 death, the KM#440 copper-nickel was one of several Liberian Diana pieces produced almost simultaneously, creating collector confusion about which issues were actually distinct strikes versus repackaged inventory.
Mintage controls were not a priority. These circulated freely in the secondary market and remain common.
