Grammatophyllum speciosum — the tiger orchid — holds the distinction of being the world's largest orchid species by mass, with single plants recorded at over a tonne in the wild. Singapore's orchid coinage series, issued through the Monetary Authority, drew on the country's long association with orchid cultivation and export, an industry the government actively developed from the 1970s onward as both a commercial enterprise and a national branding exercise.
