Hawaii's 1895 Gold Certificates of Deposit were issued by the Republic — the short-lived provisional government that replaced the Kingdom following the 1893 overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani. The Republic itself lasted only until annexation by the United States in 1898, giving this entire series a window of just a few years. These certificates were redeemable in gold coin on demand, a deliberate policy choice to stabilize confidence in a government whose political legitimacy was still being contested internationally.
American Bank Note Company produced the plates in New York. The series is scarce in any condition — the Republic's brief existence meant limited issuance and no reason to preserve notes once U.S. currency took over.
