Obverse description The national seal of the Republic of the Marshall Islands occupies the central field, depicting a frigatebird with wings outstretched in flight at centre, flanked by a traditional outrigger sailing canoe to the right and palm trees to the left, with the sun rising above crossed traditional navigational sticks in the upper field. Below the central device, two crossed stick charts appear above a ribbon bearing the word SEAL in the exergue. The entire design is encircled by a decorative chain border, with the legend REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS arcing along the upper periphery, the denomination $5 to the left, the date 1990 to the right, and the Marshallese national motto JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN along the lower periphery.
