Palau began its wildlife and colonial history themed commemorative series in the late 1990s, licensing designs through foreign minting houses for sale to collectors rather than circulation. German South West Africa — the territory now comprising modern Namibia — was the site of the 1904–1908 Herero and Nama genocide, the first genocide of the twentieth century, carried out under Imperial German colonial administration.
