Canada's gold $5 and $10 pieces were authorized under the 1910 revised Coinage Act, a deliberate push by the Dominion government to circulate domestically struck gold rather than rely on British sovereigns and American eagles that dominated Canadian commerce. The Ottawa Mint had been producing sovereigns for British account since 1908, but these were the first gold coins issued in Canadian denominations under Canadian authority.
Production ran only three years before the outbreak of war in 1914 ended the series permanently. Gold was immediately hoarded and then surrendered to war finance; very few of these pieces ever saw meaningful circulation.
