The "small portrait" designation distinguishes this series from the 1996 redesign, when the BEP shifted to enlarged, off-center vignettes and added security threads and color-shifting ink in response to increasingly sophisticated counterfeiting. The notes covered by P#444 were the last generation produced before that overhaul, printed under an essentially unchanged intaglio format that dated back to the 1929 small-size standardization.
Replacement notes — star notes — for this series used a suffix asterisk rather than the prefix position common on many other issues. The 1963 series proper spans an unusually wide range of district and signature combinations, reflecting normal turnover at Treasury rather than any monetary event.
