The 1928 series marks the Federal Reserve's switch to the smaller note format adopted that year — a cost-cutting and handling reform that replaced the large-size notes Americans had used since the Civil War. The transition was significant enough that the Treasury ran public education campaigns to reassure holders that the old notes remained legal tender.
Pick #420B corresponds to the Boston Federal Reserve district. Each district bank issued its own series under the unified 1928 design, differentiated by the branch letter and seal.
