Obverse description Central vignette comprises an intaglio portrait of Abraham Lincoln within an oval frame. To the left, the Federal Reserve Bank seal with district letter and the Treasurer's signature appear below; to the right, the Treasury seal in green and the Secretary's signature are positioned symmetrically. The obligation text and bank identification run across the upper portion of the note, with denomination numerals in each corner.

Reverse description The reverse is printed entirely in green, centered on an intaglio vignette of the Lincoln Memorial rendered in fine line engraving within an ornate elliptical border of guilloche work. The numeral 5 appears in large format in each of the four corners, with the word FIVE repeated along all four margins. Scrollwork and lathe-work panels frame the central vignette on both sides.
