| 表面の説明 | The obverse features the national seal of the Republic of the Marshall Islands at center, surrounded by the inscribed legend 'REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS' along the upper periphery and the denomination '$5' below the seal. The year of issue '1997' appears within the design, with the Marshallese national motto 'KE JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN' inscribed in the field. The design is executed in a bold relief typical of commemorative coinage of this series. |

The Marshall Islands operated one of the more unusual sovereign mint programs of the 1990s, issuing commemorative coinage under U.S. dollar denomination equivalents despite using the actual U.S. dollar as its circulating currency. These pieces were legal tender in name but designed entirely for the collector market, produced in bulk by private minting contractors and sold through direct-mail campaigns. The F-80 Shooting Star was America's first operational jet fighter, entering service in 1944 too late for meaningful combat before V-J Day.
