Issued as part of Singapore's ongoing commemorative program documenting the city-state's urban transformation, this piece marks the redevelopment of the Esplanade — Theatres on the Bay, which opened in October 2002 after a construction period plagued by delays and cost overruns that ballooned the original budget to roughly SGD 600 million. The project was contentious enough that the building's distinctive spiked dome design drew sustained public ridicule before the opening, earning the nickname "the durians."
