Reverse description The reverse presents a stylized artistic composition celebrating the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay performing arts complex in Singapore. The distinctive durian-shaped dome roof of the concert hall, rendered with its characteristic triangular aluminium sunshades, dominates the upper right of the field, while a large spherical grid structure representing the theatre dome occupies the left. The denomination $5 is boldly inscribed across the centre of the design, overlaid on the architectural motifs. Flowing decorative elements evoking the performing arts — including a phoenix, a flame, and ornamental flourishes — animate the lower right field. The legend ESPLANADE arcs along the upper rim, with THEATRES ON THE BAY curving along the lower left periphery.

Additional information

Issued as part of Singapore's ongoing commemorative program documenting the city-state's urban transformation, this piece marks the redevelopment of the Esplanade — Theatres on the Bay, which opened in October 2002 after a construction period plagued by delays and cost overruns that ballooned the original budget to roughly SGD 600 million. The project was contentious enough that the building's distinctive spiked dome design drew sustained public ridicule before the opening, earning the nickname "the durians."
