Issued under Haile Selassie I's government in the name of the 19th-century emperor Tewodros II, this coin is part of a commemorative series released ahead of the 1973 FAO World Food Conference. Tewodros II unified much of Ethiopia in the 1850s and 1860s after decades of fragmentation known as the Zemene Mesafint, and died by his own hand at Maqdala in 1868 rather than surrender to the British Expeditionary Force under Napier.
Selassie's government fell to the Derg military junta in 1974, less than two years after this coin's release.
