Issued for the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II, this coin marks a conflict that was anything but peripheral to the Solomons — the archipelago was the site of some of the Pacific theater's most brutal fighting, including the six-month Guadalcanal campaign of 1942–43, which cost tens of thousands of lives on both sides and marked the first major Allied offensive against Japanese forces.
