The UN Global Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States was held in Bridgetown, Barbados in April and May of 1994 — the first major UN conference held in a small island nation itself, rather than at a metropolitan UN headquarters. Barbados lobbied successfully to host it, and the resulting Barbados Programme of Action became the foundational policy document for SIDS development for the following decade.
The commemorative was struck by the Royal Mint on behalf of the Central Bank, a standard arrangement for Barbadian collector issues of this period.
