Niue has functioned since the 1990s as a licensed issuer for collector coins with no pretense of domestic circulation — the island's population hovers around 1,500, and its currency relationship with New Zealand means these silver pieces exist purely for the international numismatic market. This is the fifth in a fifteen-part series reproducing Klimt's works, issued the same year Austria celebrated the 100th anniversary of the painter's death on its own coinage.
Klimt completed the original painting in 1907–08 during his so-called Golden Phase, using gold leaf on canvas. The series producer, the Austrian Mint's commercial arm, holds licensing arrangements that allow non-Austrian sovereigns to issue pieces of this type.
