The textured surface faithfully replicates the carved walrus-ivory aesthetic of the original 12th-century Norse artefacts. Part of a broader series celebrating chess pieces, this issue belongs to a wave of high-relief, shaped, and oversized commemorative silver programs that Pacific island nations — Niue, Palau, the Cook Islands, and Solomon Islands among them — have licensed through European minting intermediaries since the early 2000s. The coins are legal tender in name, but the issuing nation's involvement is largely nominal; distribution and design are handled entirely by the contracting mint or bullion dealer.
Solomon Islands has no domestic mint. The actual striking of this piece almost certainly occurred in a European facility, most likely in Poland or the Czech Republic.
