Princess Grace — Grace Kelly — died in September 1982 following a stroke while driving on the Moyenne Corniche above Monaco, a road she had traveled hundreds of times. Samoa has built a substantial numismatic export program around commemorative silver issues like this one, produced specifically for the collector market rather than domestic circulation. The coin has no functional monetary role in Samoa itself.
