| Obverse description | Right-facing crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II after Ian Rank-Broadley, shown in fine detail with tiara and flowing hair. The legend ELIZABETH II is inscribed vertically to the left, with 5 DOLLARS arching along the upper rim and COOK ISLANDS to the right. The date 2017 appears in the lower exergue, and the engraver's initials IRB are visible below the truncation of the bust. The portrait is rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished proof field. |

| Additional information |
Princess Diana died on 31 August 1997 in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris. Cook Islands has issued commemorative pieces under its sovereign authority since the 1970s, and the market for Diana memorial coins — produced by mints worldwide in enormous quantities — has been relentless and largely uncritical of collector fatigue. A 145-gram gold-plated copper-nickel piece at 65mm is firmly in bullion-novelty territory, produced for gift and impulse buyers rather than numismatic collections.
Realistic secondary market values for this type sit well below issue price.
