| Additional information |
Princess Diana died on 31 August 1997 in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris. Cook Islands has issued commemorative pieces under its sovereign authority since the 1970s, and the market for Diana memorial coins — produced by mints worldwide in enormous quantities — has been relentless and largely uncritical of collector fatigue. A 145-gram gold-plated copper-nickel piece at 65mm is firmly in bullion-novelty territory, produced for gift and impulse buyers rather than numismatic collections.
Realistic secondary market values for this type sit well below issue price.
