Père Tanguy — Julien François Tanguy — was a Parisian paint supplier and committed socialist who accepted canvases in lieu of cash from broke Post-Impressionist painters, effectively bankrolling Cézanne, Gauguin, and van Gogh during years when none of them could sell. The portrait commemorated here was painted by van Gogh in 1887, one of two versions he made of Tanguy. After Tanguy's death in 1894, Rodin purchased this version to keep it from leaving France.
