Issued to mark the pontificate of Benedict XVI, this coin appeared in 2013 — the same year Benedict became the first pope to abdicate since Gregory XII in 1415. That resignation, announced in Latin before the College of Cardinals on February 11th, shocked the Church and prompted a wave of commemorative issues from minor minting authorities worldwide. Cook Islands was among several Pacific-territory issuers that rushed papal-themed silver rounds to market in the months immediately following the announcement.
