Piešťany is a Slovak spa town whose thermal springs have been exploited since at least the 16th century, and the resort became fashionable among Central European aristocracy well before the First World War. Niue's bullion and collector program has issued hundreds of small-format gold pieces tied to European localities with no meaningful connection to the island territory itself — a revenue model that has made Niue one of the more prolific nominal issuers for third-party mints, primarily Česká mincovna in Jablonec nad Nisou.
