| Obverse description | The rectangular obverse is divided into two panels. The left panel features the right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, diademed and draped, as engraved by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the engraver's initials IRB visible below the portrait. The legend ELIZABETH II / COOK ISLANDS / 5 DOLLARS 2012 / Ag 925 is inscribed below the effigy. The right panel displays an excerpt from the opening chapter of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace, headed 'War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. BOOK ONE: 1805 CHAPTER I', with decorative monogram devices overlaying the text, and a three-dimensional relief of three stacked volumes lettered WAR AND PEACE I, II, and III in the lower portion. The commemorative date range 1812-2012 appears in the exergue of the right panel, marking the bicentenary of the events depicted in the novel. |
