Beschrijving voorzijde Right-facing diademed and draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II occupying the centre of the oval field, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished black background. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the upper left rim and COOK ISLANDS along the upper right rim, both in raised capital letters. The denomination 5 DOLLARS appears in the lower exergue. The portrait is consistent with the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy used on Commonwealth coinage from 1998 onward.

Aanvullende informatie

John Paul II's 1980 visit to Cyprus was the first papal visit to the island in recorded history, and it carried considerable ecumenical weight given the Orthodox Church's historic tensions with Rome. This Cook Islands issue commemorates that moment three decades later, embedding Swarovski crystals into the coin as part of the novelty bullion market that dominated Pacific-territory minting in the late 2000s — a commercial genre Cook Islands pursued more aggressively than almost any other nominal issuer of the period.
