Pope Benedict XVI visited his Bavarian homeland in September 2006 — his first papal trip to Germany and the first time he had returned to the region where he grew up, studied, and served as Archbishop of Munich. The visit carried obvious personal weight for a pontiff who had taken the throne only the previous year.
