Altötting, in Bavaria, has been a Marian pilgrimage site since at least the 15th century, when a series of reported miracles drew crowds large enough to reshape the town's economy entirely around devotion tourism. Cook Islands issued a succession of similar crystal-inset religious pieces during this period, contracting European mints to produce them for the collector market — none were intended to circulate, and few left their presentation cases.
