Titanium coinage became commercially viable for collector issues in the early 2000s, with a handful of smaller Commonwealth territories — many operating under the Pobjoy Mint — pioneering colored anodized variants. The BVI had no particular connection to the Vancouver 2010 Olympics beyond the licensing arrangement that made these issues possible. Anodization produces the red coloration through controlled oxidation of the metal surface; it is not a coating and cannot be replicated by counterfeits using base metals.
