Issued as part of Canada's seven-series Olympic programme for the 1976 Montreal Games, this coin was authorised under legislation that created one of the most ambitious precious-metal commemorative programmes any government had attempted to that point — 28 coins across four metals, generating revenue intended to offset the staggering construction costs of the Olympic facilities. The budget overruns proved catastrophic regardless; Montreal's taxpayers were still retiring the debt in 2006.
