Khortytsia is a large island in the Dnieper River in southern Ukraine and served as the principal stronghold of the Zaporozhian Cossacks from the sixteenth century onward. The Cook Islands issued a number of these National Reserve collector pieces in the late 2000s under licensing arrangements that had nothing to do with the depicted geography — a common commercial practice for the island nation, whose mint program has long generated revenue well beyond what domestic demand could justify.
