Canada's National Anthem Act received Royal Assent on June 27, 1980, formally enshrining "O Canada" after more than a century of unofficial use — the melody had been composed by Calixa Lavallée in 1880, exactly one hundred years earlier. This coin marks the fortieth anniversary of that legislation. The Royal Canadian Mint issued it as part of a broader commemorative program that year, though the mintage was tightly controlled for the collector market rather than general release.
