| Obverse description | At centre, a raised inner disk bears the diademed effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, after the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait, with the legend ELIZABETH II NIUE 2022 arcing around the upper periphery. Below the effigy, the denomination 5 DOLLARS and the fineness and weight mark Ag 999 3oz are inscribed across the lower arc of the inner disk. The broad outer field of the coin features an intricate high-relief design of two ferocious tigers flanking a pair of crossed golden-gilt spears, their hafts bound at the centre, set against a finely engraved geometric diamond-pattern background. A stylised dragon mask is rendered in relief at the lower centre between the tigers. The entire composition is framed by a deeply sculpted border of overlapping dragon scales in ultra-high relief. |

| Additional information |
Ma Chao was a Han dynasty general whose campaigns against Cao Cao in the early 3rd century AD became the stuff of later legend, most durably through his portrayal in Luo Guanzhong's 14th-century novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This coin belongs to Niue's ongoing series drawing from that novel's cast — a licensing and revenue arrangement that has made the small Pacific territory one of the more prolific issuers of Chinese historical themed bullion over the past decade.
The 93.3g format places it in the 3 troy ounce category, a weight class favored for large-format color-printed issues where the coin's surface area does the commercial work.
