Additional information

Cook Islands issued a sprawling series of wildlife-themed crown-sized copper-nickel pieces in the early 1990s, largely marketed through teleshop and mail-order channels in Europe and the United States. These were not coins minted to serve any domestic monetary function — Cook Islands had no meaningful circulation coinage infrastructure — but rather collector items produced under licensing arrangements, with the nominal face value a legal formality.

The lowland gorilla was listed as vulnerable by the IUCN at the time of issue; its status has since deteriorated to critically endangered.
