The Kirillovsky Church in Kyiv — more properly the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius — dates to the 12th century and survived Mongol destruction, Polish-Lithuanian rule, and Soviet antireligious campaigns largely intact. It houses a cycle of original Byzantine frescoes, including works later attributed to Mikhail Vrubel, who painted new murals there in 1884 while largely unknown. The Cook Islands' architectural silver series from this period drew heavily on Eastern European sacred sites that had endured extraordinary political disruption.
KM#651 is part of a prolific collector-market run. Mintage figures for individual issues in this series were rarely disclosed publicly.
