Jaroslav Lev of Rožmitál was a Bohemian nobleman who undertook an extraordinary diplomatic journey across Western Europe from 1465 to 1467, ostensibly as a goodwill embassy on behalf of his brother-in-law, the Hussite king George of Poděbrady. The mission was partly a charm offensive — George needed Catholic allies at a moment when Pope Paul II was actively working to depose him. Rožmitál's party traveled through Germany, France, England, Spain, and Portugal, with several members keeping detailed travel journals that survive today as rare firsthand accounts of late-medieval European courts.
Niue's bullion and commemorative gold program has issued dozens of similar one-tenth-ounce pieces honoring Central European historical figures largely unknown outside the Czech and Slovak collector markets.
