Aanvullende informatie

This coin belongs to a Solomon Islands commemorative program from the mid-1990s that drew heavily on British imperial history — a curious editorial choice for a nation independent since 1978. Charles George Gordon was killed at Khartoum in January 1885 when Mahdist forces breached the city after a ten-month siege, two days before a British relief column arrived. The delay in dispatching that column became one of the great political scandals of Gladstone's government, and Gordon's death was exploited relentlessly by the press and opposition as evidence of Liberal weakness.

Struck in .500 fine silver — half-silver by standard — rather than the .925 used in more ambitious commemoratives of the period.
