Tuvalu's late-1990s and early-2000s dinosaur series was produced under the Perth Mint's expanding commemorative program for Pacific island territories, which used Tuvalu's nominal Commonwealth status to issue collector coins bearing Elizabeth II's effigy. Giganotosaurus carolinii had only been formally described in 1995 by Rodolfo Coria and Leonardo Salgado, making this coin among the earliest numismatic treatments of the species — struck less than a decade after its scientific recognition.
