The Czech Lion bullion series, struck for Niue by the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou, was introduced in 2018 as a direct response to the surging collector and investor appetite for sovereign-backed silver that had driven similar programs from the Perth and Royal Canadian mints. The 2019 issue is the second in the annual series. Niue's role as issuer reflects a long-standing arrangement — the island territory has licensed its monetary authority to back dozens of foreign-produced collector coins, a practice formalized through agreements with New Zealand.
