Additional information

The "GML" designation identifies this as part of the Royal Canadian Mint's Gold Maple Leaf series, with the 20-year privy mark commemorating the original 1979 introduction of the Gold Maple Leaf — the first modern bullion coin to achieve .9999 fine purity, a standard that forced competitors including the South African Krugerrand and Austrian Philharmonic to eventually revise their own fineness claims. The colored variant was a limited collector device applied that year as the RCM began experimenting with selective colorization on bullion issues.
