Clark Gable died in November 1960, just eleven days after completing principal photography on The Misfits — his final film, and the last for Marilyn Monroe as well. The Cook Islands issue appeared in 2010 on the fiftieth anniversary of his death, part of a broader wave of celebrity commemoratives the territory authorized through the New Zealand–administered licensing framework that made it a favored vehicle for novelty collector issues through the 2000s and 2010s.
